Ms. Hamilton underwent a hysterectomy in June 2018. The procedure was not performed to a reasonable and appropriate standard and Ms. Hamilton’s lower abdominal area was burnt from the diathermy equipment used during the operation. As a result, Ms. Hamilton suffered from a 1.5-2cm burn on the right side of her lower abdomen. Ms. Hamilton remained in hospital for two days to recover from surgery.
After undergoing surgery, Ms. Hamilton’s wound area was not healing and she suffered from an ongoing infection from June to August 2018. She attended the hospital on a regular basis (at least 3 to 4 times per week) to have her wound checked and cleaned.
In August 2018, Ms. Hamilton attended her GP Surgery regarding her ongoing infection. She was suffering from excruciating pain as a result of the infection and the infected area was very swollen. The GP examined Ms. Hamilton’s wound and confirmed that there was a thread of stitching hanging out of the wound and that the stitching had therefore not been appropriately removed after surgery and advised her to attend the hospital. Ms. Hamilton attended the hospital and her wound was examined and a large stitch of approximately 14cm was found and removed from the wound area.
As a result of the Hospital’s negligence, Ms. Hamilton suffered from a burn injury during surgery to her lower abdominal area, right-hand side (above her bikini line), measuring 1.5-2cm, scaring as a result of the burn and 2 months of pain and suffering from ongoing infection as a result of both the burn and the failure to appropriately remove the retained sutures. It was admitted by the hospital that Ms. Hamilton received negligent treatment both during and after undergoing surgery.
