Government could increase driving age

Young drivers could have to wait until they are 18 to take their test, as the government bids to reduce road traffic accidents in the UK.

The Department for Transport has stated that young drivers undertake just 5% of the country’s total mileage, but are involved in 20% of accidents in which someone is killed or seriously injured.

A further 10% of new road users are cited for driving offences within their first year behind the wheel.

Rule change would mean restrictions on new drivers

In response to this, a government-commissioned report has recommended introducing a “learner stage” for 17-year-olds, which would require them to undertake at least 100 hours of supervised daytime practise, and a minimum of 20 hours at night.

They would then get a probationary licence and have to operate under a number of restrictions. These include a driving curfew between 10 pm and 5 am, unless accompanied by a passenger over 30, and a total ban on passengers under 30 for any new drivers (unless they are over 30 themselves).

All forms of a mobile phone would be banned, including hands-free sets, while alcohol limits would also be lower. After 12 months of operating within these rules, a driver will be granted a full licence.

It is hoped that if this is applied to all drivers aged between 17 and 19, it will mean 4,471 fewer casualties on the road and savings of £224 million. In addition, insurance costs for young drivers would also be reduced if the number of accidents decreased as hoped.

The government is poised to consider these findings and publish a Green Paper on the subject later this year.
